Paid Internships: Curatorial and Education Departments

Description:
The National Museum of Wildlife Art Education Department offers two museum internships for individuals interested in gaining better knowledge and hands-on experience in museum studies.

We are currently accepting applications for two different summer museum internships, The Lillian Thomason Gemar Education Internship, and the McGee Curatorial Internship.

Applicants are welcome to apply for both the Education Internship and the Curatorial Internship. If you are interested in both, this will require two separate applications to the appropriate contact person.

Education Internship:

$7,200 stipend for a 12-week internship

A challenging internship for Summer 2020 for a graduate-level student interested in the field of museum education. The internship focuses on education and exhibits, including management of Open Studio, educational programming, audience engagement, facilitating program assessments, as well as a self-selected project. Applicants with experience in informal teaching, public programming, film-making, and design are encouraged to apply.

Education Internship:
APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 1, 2020 (POSTMARKED BY DEADLINE)

$7,200 stipend for a 12-week internship

The Curatorial Internship is offered to a graduate level student who will gain qualitative experience in preparation for a future career in museums or an art-related field. The internship is focused on curatorial projects and provides hands-on museum experience while providing support to the Curatorial Department. Previous projects have included research, writing, and exhibit planning.

Application Proceedure for Internships:
For Applicants of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The candidate may arrange for academic credit through his/her college or university. The Museum will provide letters of reference and necessary documentation as required by the institution. It is the responsibility of the candidate to provide his/her own transportation and housing during the duration of the internship.

Selected candidates will be notified by March 1, 2020.

There are no application forms. Application letters should be typed and must include the following:

  • Name, home and school addresses, and telephone numbers
  • Full resume of education and employment, including list of art history and other relevant courses taken, and foreign languages spoken and/or written
  • Two letters of academic recommendation
  • One letter of character recommendation
  • School transcripts
  • Essay or letter of intent of five hundred words or less describing the applicant’s career goals, interest in museum work, specific areas of interest within the Museum, reason for applying to the Internship Program, and how applicant’s background and experience will benefit the Museum through this internship

The preferred period of the internship will be 12 continuous weeks, but no less than eight continuous weeks. The pre-agreed term of the internship will take into consideration the individual circumstances of the intern. The internship will provide a weekly stipend of $600 per week based on hours worked. The internships should begin by June 15.
