Manager, Audience and Interpretation

Job Summary

The Getty Museum seeks a Manager, Audience and Interpretation to inform and shape our ambitious program of exhibitions, collection display, and media. 

The Manager will lead a team of interpretation staff tasked with maintaining standards of excellence in written and media interpretation of our art collection and exhibitions. They will develop and lead a program of research into audience needs and use those audience insights to establish and deliver best practices for interpretation. Together, we will make interpretation recommendations to our curatorial teams and inform content decisions with measurable audience data, creating content that connects with our audiences emotionally and intellectually and is inclusive by design. Our aim is to support and expand a real-world, diverse audience in ways that enhances their experience of art and their visit to the museum.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in audience and market research, including the synthesis of data into actionable insights and an ability to translate it into effective educational communication both in-gallery and online. They will have exceptional written and verbal communication, strong editorial skills, and the ability to effectively advocate for inclusivity and the needs of diverse audiences.

This position is based in Los Angeles and is part of the museum’s Education, Public Programs, and Interpretive Content division.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead qualitative research including audience interviews, focus groups, and observation
  • Plan and lead quantitative research including formal surveys, online analytic studies, and demographics
  • Play a leading role in project planning with an emphasis on audience insights and inclusivity
  • Craft and communicate best practices for interpretation based on audience research
  • Collaborate with curatorial, education, exhibition, and media staff to ensure that the entire interpretation process follows established standards
  • Verify success with further research
  • Review text from various authors and recommend audience-centered interpretation strategies
  • Manage a team of editors and interpreters, including supervising work, training, and evaluation
  • Hire and manage freelance consultants, including editors, proofers, and researchers
  • Applies extensive knowledge of area of expertise used by supervisory, professional, lead or project staff 
  • Manages subordinate employees including mentoring, coaching, counseling, training, evaluating and coordinating the employee’s work
  • Provides direction based on organizational goals and policy
  • Acts as an advisor to staff members to meet schedules or resolve technical or operational problems
  • Works directly with internal and external clients on a variety of issues and projects
  • Establishes operating policies and procedures affecting areas of responsibility
  • Ensures that projects are completed on schedule and within budget

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master's degree preferred
  • 3 to 6 years of supervisory and/or project/process management experience
  • Proficiency in standard business software

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with recognized standards for gallery text
  • Familiarity with existing scholarship on museum interpretation
  • Experience presenting research to non-experts
  • Experience in delivering conference talks and papers
  • A track record of published research in the cultural heritage field is a preferred
  • Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign
