Manager, Membership and Annual Outreach

Description:
The Manager, Membership and Annual Outreach manages all aspects of a comprehensive membership program, to include the acquisition of new members and the renewal and upgrade of existing members. In addition, he/she will oversee and grow an annual outreach plan for unrestricted gifts under $1,000. Under the direction of the Senior Vice President, Development, the Membership and Annual Outreach Manager will:

• Set an ambitious and strategic membership plan, focused on retention of existing members and acquisition of new members, contributing to Newseum revenue goals
• Be responsible for concept, scheduling and execution of Membership acquisition, renewal and annual outreach via direct mail including segmentation strategy, testing packages and initiatives, and reporting results
• Markets and manages all membership events and promotions including unique and exclusive activities for exhibition and permanent collection openings, museum programs and members-only offerings, in collaboration with colleagues within development and throughout the organization
• Partner closely with the marketing, exhibits, and program team to implement promotions, partnerships and communications that build museum membership and community engagement
• Develop new member programs and services that advance the field. Research and incorporate membership and annual outreach “best practices” into Newseum strategies. May include development of new content or repackaging of existing member materials as necessary. Determines pricing strategy for membership and, when appropriate, create services that may generate earned revenue.
• Interface regularly with all departments to ensure that key information is tracked and can be strategically used to drive new memberships
• Work closely with the Campaign and Development Services team to manage gift acknowledgements and other correspondence and data important for the stewardship of members and the maintenance of donor/prospect records
• Regularly collaborate with the Manager, Individual Giving to ensure membership processes among affiliate groups are consistent and current
• Work closely with development team members to identify major gifts prospects through membership and/or annual outreach programs
• Monitor progress of budgeted revenues/expenses to maintain a positive variance in membership and annual outreach budget lines
• Set, execute, evaluate and report monthly progress toward goals for membership acquisition, renewals, upgrades and annual support
• Oversee membership database and files in a current and accurate manner
• Hire, train and oversee Membership Associate
• Other duties related to the goals of the Development Department as assigned

Professional Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with 3-5 years of membership experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for acquiring, retaining and upgrading membership and annual support
• Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision
• Self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals
• Ability to maintain a high level of poise, reflecting the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity in all circumstances
• Ability to initiate and build relationships with members
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of staff in a team environment.
• Ability to travel regionally and nationally to meet with members and cultivate new membership or annual support
• Mature judgment, discretion and professionalism in researching and communicating information
• Scrupulous attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to think strategically, and to anticipate and orchestrate next steps
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
• Superior written and verbal communication skills
• A work ethic that is self-motivated, reliable and detail-oriented
• Excellent computer skills; Raiser’s Edge experience preferred
• A passion for the First Amendment

This is a full-time position.

This position requires the ability to travel regionally and nationally to meet with donors and potential donors.
